First dates can be tricky. Here are 5 questions to ask on date 1 that can let you know whether you’re attracted to their face or their soul:

  1. “What Celebrity Would You Trade Lives With?”

This is a more fun way of asking who they look up to, which will definitely give you an idea of what type of person they aspire to be — or, at the very least, what kind of fantasy lifestyle appeals to them.

  1. “If You Were A Musician, What Would Be The Title Of Your First Album?”

Most people are going to pick a word or phrase that holds some personal significance for them, which is a pretty organic segue into talking about the more meaningful events of their life thus far.

  1. “What Is Your Weirdest Deal Breaker?”

I once posed this question to a date who I just couldn’t seem to figure out if I actually wanted to see again. He paused to think, looked me straight in the eye and said, “An android.” In hindsight, I’m pretty sure this was the one-liner that got me to agree to a second date. (I mean, he wasn’t wrong; nothing good ever comes from dating out of the fold.)

  1. “What’s The Best Gift You’ve Ever Received?”

A little sentimentality never hurt nobody. This is a perfect chance for you to spot the low-key trolls who say something super sweet, but that’s probably a total lie (a la a haiku from their little cousin).

  1. “What’s The Greatest Television Show Of All Time, IYO?”

Just imagine that you’re on a date with someone and things are going fine — not amazing, but also not bad — and out of nowhere, they start talking about the most obscure show ever and you guys totally bond over it. Now you’re even more attracted to them. It works!

Now. Let’s say you go on said first date and ask those questions. How do you know if the conversation is going well? How do you know you’re truly compatible? Read on…

  1. You Feel Relaxed Talking To Them

Something in their vibe, demeanor, and attitude allows you to take a breath and present the best version of yourself.

  1. You’re On The Same Page When It Comes To Spelling

Don’t underestimate the power of grammar and spelling, especially if you are online dating. “The answers to these questions really vary person-by-person. But, the real rule of thumb is that if you’re not vibing with their spelling, then it’s probably a no-go!” says Davis.

  1. You’re Actually Interested In Talking About The Same Things

If you find everything they talk about to be only normally interesting or flat-out boring, then keep it moving to the next person. Very few things in life are as fun as when you really connect with someone about the things you are excited about.

  1. They Are Geographically Desirable

Proximity matters. You should know before things move forward exactly how much travel is required if you are going to make a go of it with them. Clearwater Beach is basically long distance to Lakeland. While this isn’t make or break, being able to see each other regularly is definitely a factor in compatibility.

  1. Their Weekends Look Similar To Your Weekends

Knowing how someone likes to spend their free time is a great way to know what a shared life with them looks like. If your weekend was going to a film festival and then curling up with a good book, and theirs was a full marathon, then you’re probably not super compatible.

  1. You Like Their Personality

It’s actually more complicated than you think. It’s not just about having that good vibe with someone; it’s about having a personality the feels “just right.” Beyond liking their personality, they should be someone you think is “agreeable.”
